|
Shuri-jo castle is symbolic of the history and culture of Okinawa. Standing on the hill of limestone with the altitude of about 120 meters, it is surrounded by the castle wall which draws a curve, in which there are a lot of facilities. It was a castle where a king lived between 1429 and 1879 when the kingdom of Ryukyu lasted. The castle flourished as the center of politics, diplomacy and culture in Ryukyu and it possessed many open spaces. There was also a holy place of faith. These clusters of buildings were all burnt down in the battle in Okinawa, but the State Chamber which is a main facility was restored in 1992.
