The Ruins of Katsuren Castle

● Summary  

 

The ruins of Katsuren castle were registered as “the gusuku of the kingdom of Ryukyu” on the list of the world heritage of UNESCO with Shuri castle and others in December, 2000. They are located at Katsuren-nanpu-baru close to the root of Katsuren peninsula. Their structure becomes low like stairs from the first quarter which is the highest to the second, the third, and the fourth one, and it becomes high again at the east quarter of the southeast. Katsuren castle was one of the lord of Katsuren which was built before and after the thirteenth century, when the overseas trade was thriving and he established the prosperity. It is also well-known as the castle of Kazutoshi Ama, a powerful lord, who resisted against the king to the last in the process of the stabilization of the sovereign power of the kingdom of Ryukyu.
