The Streetscape of Aburatsu and The Horikawa Canal

● Summary  

 

The town of Aburatsu is the most flourishing in Nichinan city. Aburatsu is the region which was civilized centering about the Aburatsu port from the Nara and Heian eras in the old days. It flourished as the strategic port of the Ito clan and played the role of the Obi cedar shipping port in the Edo era. In the Meiji era, it further prospered and many commercial houses stood in a row on the riverside of the Horikawa canal. It can be said that the Horikawa canal and the Horikawa bridge are symbolic of this streetscape of Aburatsu The Horikawa canal was constructed by connecting the Hiroto river to the Aburatsu port in order to make it easy to take out wood.
