● Summary |
Dejima which had played the role of the only window to the world during the period of the national isolation in the Edo era in Japan was restored as it was in about 1820 and opened as the new institution in 2006. In the whole neighborhood of the east and the south of the hilly sections where the foreign settlement was formed, the Western style buildings which were constructed from the end of the Tokugawa regime to the Meiji period stand in a row, retaining the historic scenic beauty of the old days, being integrated with the stone pavements and the brick walls. On the hill overlooking the sea, many of the national treasures and the important cultural assets such as Oura cathedral and the Glover former residence are in existence.
