The Streetscape of Waki-machi Udatsu

● Summary  

 

Waki-machi which is blessed with the water transportation of the Yoshino River flourished as a port of shipment and a trading center of the Awa indigos. The rows of houses still speak the prosperity of those days in cooperation with the elegant lattice of fire walls called “Udatsu” as a symbol to display the prosperity of the family fortunes and the white plastered wall storehouses. This street was designated as the preservation district for groups of historic buildings in December, 1988.
