Mt. Koyasan

● Summary  

 

Mt. Koya is the general term of the religious city on the mountain which keeps about 1200 years’ history of the mountain of faith. Even today, 117 temples stand close together on the basin of the top of the mountain which has the altitude of about 900 meters. Kongobu-ji, the head temple of the Koya-san Shingon sect which spreads all over Japan, was founded by Saint Kobo as the fundamental training hall for the Shingon esoteric Buddhism in 816. It was registered as “the sacred sites and pilgrimage route in the Kii mountain range” on the list of the world heritage in July, 2004.

● Access

Get off at Gokuraku-bashi Sta. of the Nankai-koya Line, and there get on the Nankai-Koyasan cable car to Koyasan Sta. for five min.
